Personal introduction

Gaëlle Fontaine is full Professor at Centrale Lille Institut. She is a researcher within the Materials and Transformations Unit (UMET - UMR/CNRS 8207).

Holding a PhD in Organic Synthesis from the University of Caen (1999), her early research focused on the design of molecules for therapeutic purposes. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge (England) in the pharmaceutical field, she was appointed Associate Professor at the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille (ENSCL) in 2001. In 2005, she underwent a major thematic shift toward the fire behavior of polymer materials, a field in which she obtained her Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) in 2013.

Her multidisciplinary research activities are structured around several key areas:

  • Synthesis of new flame retardants: Designing and developing innovative flame-retardant molecules.

  • Flame retardancy and intumescence mechanisms: Elucidating the physical and chemical mechanisms that protect materials against fire, using advanced characterization tools such as NMR, EPR, IR, TGA, and DSC.

  • Material durability: Studying the impact of aging on the fire performance of materials.
  • Reactive extrusion: Synthesis and flame retardancy of polylactide (PLA) via clean and continuous processes, as well as the development of biocomposites and PLA stereocomplexes.
