During the mid 2010's I got acutely aware of the absolute environmental emergency of our time. Since then, I have progressively oriented my teaching and research activities in material sciences towards strong sustainability.
I work in research on two topics:
- in braking tribology, I am specialized in microstructural and chemical characterization of rubbing surfaces. My role is to enhance our team's understanding of the tribological circuit, that is to say the matter that is produced, gathered, trapped, liberated and sometimes recaptured by the contact. In the long run, we hope to help diminish the health and environmental impacts during production (materials and processes), use (particles and VOC emissions) and end of life. My favourite tools are electronic microscopes.
- in ecodesign, I work on the scientific validation, improvement and diffusion of low-techs. Low-techs are answers to human needs that favour parcimony to enhance sustainability, accessibility, empowerment and creativity. This approach to design implies to be more selective about the needs we choose to answer, but also to set stronger limits to materials and processes selection, thus asking for a deep and multidsisciplinary scientific understanding.
I teach:
- materials science, linking processes, microstructure and mechanical properties, and working on both steel and wood,
- strong sustainability with a multidisciplinary approach, linking the industrial processes used to extract, process, sort and recycle materials to their consequences and structural limits. I focus on oil and on some metals used in the so-called green transition.
I gather these two topics for postgraduate students in Centrale and ITEEM through project learning in ecodesign. Starting with a need to answer, they have to work on the specifications and design - or re-design, as engineers.
