Johan Sarazin est Chargé de recherche à Centrale Lille Institut et chercheur au sein de l’Unité Matériaux et Transformations (UMET – UMR CNRS 8207), dans l’équipe Ingénierie des Systèmes Polymères (ISP) et le groupe R2Fire. Ses travaux portent sur le comportement au feu des matériaux, avec pour objectif de comprendre les mécanismes physiques et physico-chimiques qui gouvernent leur réponse lorsqu’ils sont soumis à des sollicitations thermiques et aux conditions d’incendie.
Son parcours scientifique et professionnel se caractérise par une trajectoire atypique, construite progressivement au contact de la recherche et de l’expérimentation. Après une première expérience comme technicien chimiste et microbiologiste dans le domaine des analyses environnementales, il entreprend, en parallèle de son activité professionnelle, une formation d’ingénieur en chimie industrielle au CNAM. Il rejoint ensuite l’UMET, au sein de l’équipe ISP/R2Fire, d’abord comme ingénieur d’étude puis comme ingénieur de recherche. Il participe notamment au développement des travaux menés dans le cadre de l’ERC FireBar (2015–2020). Il rejoint par la suite Centrale Lille Institut en tant que Chargé de recherche et obtient son doctorat par Validation des Acquis de l’Expérience (VAE), avec des travaux consacrés au comportement au feu des matériaux, à la conception de dispositifs expérimentaux et au développement de protocoles expérimentaux innovants.
Ses activités de recherche se situent à l’interface entre science du feu, science des matériaux et ingénierie expérimentale. Elles associent la caractérisation thermophysique des matériaux, l’étude des phénomènes d’ignition, de dégradation thermique, de pyrolyse et de combustion, ainsi que l’analyse des mécanismes responsables de leur comportement au feu. Une dimension importante de son activité réside dans la conception et le développement de dispositifs expérimentaux originaux. Lorsque les méthodes existantes ne permettent pas de répondre à une problématique scientifique donnée, il conçoit et développe des bancs d’essai spécifiques et les moyens d’instrumentation associés, depuis la conception assistée par ordinateur (CAO) jusqu’à l’intégration des capteurs, l’acquisition des données et la validation expérimentale.
Cette approche fait de l’ingénierie de recherche et de l’instrumentation scientifique une composante centrale de son activité. Il développe notamment des dispositifs permettant d’étudier le comportement des matériaux dans des conditions thermiques et environnementales contrôlées, et contribue à l’évolution des méthodologies expérimentales nécessaires à l’étude de nouveaux scénarios de feu. Cette démarche vise non seulement à caractériser les performances des matériaux, mais surtout à relier les observations expérimentales aux mécanismes physiques et chimiques qui les gouvernent.
Il est également fortement impliqué dans la gestion et le développement des moyens expérimentaux de l’UMET. Il participe à la gestion de la plateforme Fire Resist, dédiée à la caractérisation du comportement au feu, tout en assurant également la gestion et l’évolution d’autres équipements scientifiques et moyens de conception expérimentale en dehors de cette plateforme. Ses responsabilités couvrent notamment l’acquisition, l’installation, la mise en service, la maintenance, la qualification, l’instrumentation et l’évolution des équipements, ainsi que la formation des utilisateurs.
Ses recherches s’inscrivent à la fois dans des projets académiques et dans de nombreuses collaborations industrielles avec des partenaires issus notamment des secteurs de l’énergie, de l’aéronautique et du spatial, du bâtiment, des peintures et revêtements, de la chimie et des matériaux polymères. Ces collaborations vont de prestations de caractérisation et d’essais à des travaux plus complexes visant le développement de matériaux ou de systèmes présentant des performances améliorées vis-à-vis du feu, ainsi qu’à des études liées à l’évolution des contraintes réglementaires et à la substitution de certaines substances.
Une part croissante de ses activités porte sur les nouveaux scénarios de feu et les environnements extrêmes, notamment ceux associés à l’hydrogène, aux batteries et aux systèmes de stockage d’énergie, ainsi qu’aux applications spatiales. Ces nouvelles problématiques soulèvent des questions auxquelles les méthodes d’essai conventionnelles ne permettent pas toujours de répondre directement et nécessitent le développement de nouvelles approches expérimentales. Cette démarche se prolonge notamment dans le cadre de l’ERC Synergy Grant FireSpace (2026–2032), consacré à l’étude des interactions entre feu, matériaux et environnement dans les conditions particulières des applications spatiales.
Parallèlement à ses activités de recherche, Johan Sarazin assure des missions d’encadrement et de transmission des compétences expérimentales auprès de techniciens, d’assistants ingénieurs, d’étudiants de BUT2 à Master 2, ainsi que de doctorants et de post-doctorants. Il intervient également dans l’enseignement en BUT3 Chimie, notamment sur les thématiques de l’eau, de son analyse et des enjeux liés à cette ressource, ainsi que sur la physique et la chimie de l’incendie appliquées aux matériaux.
Au-delà de ses activités de recherche et de ses responsabilités expérimentales, Johan Sarazin est également impliqué dans les domaines de la normalisation et de la sécurité au laboratoire. Il participe aux travaux de la commission AFNOR CP92, contribuant aux réflexions et aux évolutions relatives aux méthodes d’essai et à la normalisation dans le domaine du feu. Il exerce également les fonctions d’Assistant de Prévention, contribuant à la mise en œuvre des démarches de prévention des risques et à la sécurité des activités et installations expérimentales.
À travers ce parcours, son activité se situe à la rencontre de la science des matériaux, de la science du feu et de l’ingénierie de recherche. Sa démarche associe compréhension des mécanismes, conception, instrumentation et expérimentation, avec l’objectif de développer les moyens scientifiques nécessaires pour étudier le comportement des matériaux dans des conditions conventionnelles comme dans des scénarios de feu émergents et des environnements extrêmes. Cette complémentarité entre question scientifique, conception, instrumentation et expérimentation constitue aujourd’hui l’un des axes structurants de son activité de recherche.
