To study the influence of defects and microstructure on the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation and propagation, I am employing several experimental approaches. The first part involves the production, via casting, of model test specimens with controlled microstructures, particularly in terms of defects. The second part involves characterizing the influence of defects on fatigue properties and studying crack propagation by coupling fatigue tests with in-situ measurements of displacement fields (2D/3D) at the microstructural scale on the surface or within volumetric defects. This coupled experimental approach therefore relies in part on the use of X-ray microtomography, both to characterize the defects resulting from the manufacturing process in three dimensions and to characterize the damage at the scale of these defects.

Within LaMcube, my work is part of the COREFoU team—Behavior and Mechanisms of Damage and Fatigue: Analysis and Modeling.
